Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments from skipper Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in several interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second Ashes series against the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

But, following the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, he said his players had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the guidance from Stokes and coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's drought in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – after England losing the initial matches in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

While Crawley's innings in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term place in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is talk externally. There's no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
