They're Doing to America What They Executed to Christianity

The Trump movement's most revealing and distinctive moments – not its most crucial, nor cruelest, nor most threatening, nor most senseless, but perhaps its most illuminating – emerged earlier this harvest season. During the period of multiple weeks, the nation's leader began displaying all observers his plans for a lavish reception room two times larger compared to the White House and then commenced independently demolishing the East Wing portion to construct it.

He has performed deeds ten thousand times worse – the current estimate of deaths due to his slashing to international aid is 600,000 and growing, and presently an analysis projected his fossil fuel policies would kill an additional 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No previous president would have attempted – genuinely, no other president would have contemplated – independently wrecking significant portions of the White House to construct a Versailles-style party room, with the enthusiastic participation of some of the richest Americans, almost all of whom have business with public institutions.

We transitioned from 'the gentle will obtain the Earth' to 'the gentle will succumb of cholera'

As confusing as it is to observe the president try to upend the established notion about democracy and substitute it with its direct contrary, there is one large group of Americans who wouldn't consider it totally unfamiliar. That encompasses people such as ourselves – within elder demographics close to half – who were raised within mainstream Protestant traditions.

We have watched over the years while conservative evangelical congregations turned the Jesus we learned about into the total contrary of our perception of his character. Essentially, they converted a persona of compassion into a symbol of animosity who endorses exactly the harshness that he denounced in biblical teachings; this has happened more slowly, across decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless disturbing via comparable methods, a bewildering emotional blow for many of us.

A Toxic Christianity Gains Ground

So let me first describe the Christ from my upbringing, as conceptually Jesus is the center of any Christian faith, and since the fastest-growing cadre of Americans may possess limited understanding about him since they are skeptics or uncertain individuals or religiously unaffiliated. I raise no objection with these various perspectives, nor with alternative spiritual paths; yet I maintain that exist valuable insights of significant worth in the Christian story.

It is emphatically definitely not the story of a mighty king arising; instead, an infant arrives to homeless parents in a storage space, who need to rapidly escape to a foreign land to avoid secret police. The infant develops in modest conditions, an employed craftsman; his teaching is about love for other people, particularly for the poor – not merely emotional affection, but a concrete one, demonstrated through nourishing and protecting. Christ's response to violence is to present the opposite cheek – not as an act of submissive tolerance, but as a method to teach the aggressor; his approach to wrongdoing states that when an individual takes your jacket you should give the person your additional clothing also.

The evident and direct fact that the Jesus from scripture advocates for a type of profound affection focused on the needy has consistently rendered Christian religion somewhat of a provocative belief system: engaging for the general public, but owing to its inherent radicalness demanding to be controlled. During the 1950s it was restrained through watering down – Protestant Christianity was so prevalent that it essentially sanctified existing conditions.

A Battle for the Highest Among Us

Hence I have become heartened to witness the steadfast resistance against Trump emerge in this past year. It has served as significant comfort to participate in developing the campaign that has demonstrated publicly in rally after rally, and seems to have inspired citizens to show up in numbers in the off-year elections. We shall require to maintain it, and through comparable resolve, with American flags during all protests and calls to the highest qualities of American history.

We're going to be asked ... about how you treated the immigrant? Did you receive him and embrace them or refuse?

The nation is most protected, essentially, by reference to the best about American history, similar to Christianity is optimally secured by relationship to what makes it special and magnificent, particularly the pattern of Christ. In neither case does it suggest pretending the most negative about the nation and religious tradition never occurred; it signifies both humility and belief, a mixture that committed national faithful should embrace.
