The Former President's Woke Alarm Overlooks Europe's True Danger: Technological Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a flawed assessment of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" agendas pose an existential threat to European civilization. However, this argument is based on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The actual challenge facing the EU is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Economic Divide Between Europe and the US

Statistics paint a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, while a paltry 13.5% growth for the EU. Over this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now boasts a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like Italy and France.

Today, roughly 50% of the global top fifty technology firms are American, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Question

This widening disparity is driven by superior productivity growth in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, versus just 14 in Europe.

This disparity prompts a pressing issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is the EU positioned? Most analysts concede it is largely a two-horse race involving the United States and China, with European nations starting at a significant handicap.

Root Causes of Europe's Technological Lag

Several major reasons explain this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and agile network for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a true unified investment market, a factor that limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided regulation hinder European business. A US startup can introduce a service under one set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population, is divided among 27 different national systems, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was once met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, there are reasons for optimism. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to propose substantial change. Notable analyses on EU competitiveness and the single market highlight the need for sweeping reforms.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, these assets could support much higher degrees of commercial innovation.

Europe retains considerable advantages: high-quality human capital, excellent education systems, and world-class research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and high savings rates, these elements could unleash a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating next-generation technologies, it can still significantly increase productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a decisive crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. However, without bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent decline in global economic relevance.
