Tetris Couldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Whenever a major awards ceremony nears, one notices an outcry for the addition fresh award types to honor unsung work and fill the hearts of followers with niche passions.

Another commentator has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. The same goes for board games, which is someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why movie academies steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an essential concession within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition in any category in 2014
  • A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked that year
  • Just some logic titles barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most engaged experiences worldwide continuing this trend for many years.

The famous puzzle experience competes with well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. You could fill multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary game development, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait decades.
