European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In related judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has halted efforts to reduce security grants to local governments which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The official stated the action was “a further instance” of tying government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city prior to the new year, coinciding with an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to accept dozens of individuals from the US in exchange for increased assistance, after concluding a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Additionally, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit seeking the removal of a political figure’s name from a well-known cultural institution in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a wider ideology in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, drawing comparisons with past foreign policy strategies.
