A Significant Event when Rosenior Shatters Obstacles

"Liam Rosenior is an excellent manager who knows the game inside out, which is the most important thing.

"However, in my role as Chelsea's first African heritage player, it would be dishonest to claim this appointment fails to move me."

These were the sentiments of the former Chelsea winger, who earned his historic first appearance for Chelsea's senior side off the bench in the spring of 1982.

On Tuesday, the club named Strasbourg manager Liam Rosenior, aged 41, to be their next head coach following the exit of manager Enzo Maresca.

Strasbourg are within a multi-club ownership group that also owns Chelsea.

Statistics show just 12 black managers – not including those holding interim positions – in the Premier League since it began thirty-four in the past.

"One thing that impresses me about Liam is that he was raised and developed his game not far from here, he knows this community," continued Canoville.

"When children see someone like Liam in charge of their club, someone they can identify with, from a similar background, from a household that fights for equality… that's powerful demonstrating that opportunities exist.

"So yes, it is an enormous moment for Chelsea, for the capital, for every aspiring individual with big dreams.

"But right now? We must support Rosenior, provide him with the necessary tools, and let the man get on with the job."

What Do the Data Reveal?

The iconic Dutchman Ruud Gullit was appointed the Blues' manager in 1996 and became the Premier League's first black manager.

A dozen years on, in 2008, Paul Ince was appointed as the pioneering black English manager in the Premier League after taking charge at Blackburn Rovers.

The Hammers' manager Nuno Espirito Santo currently stands as the sole additional present Premier League boss from a minority ethnic background.

The lack of ethnic minority managers throughout English football is matched by an absence of diversity at executive level.

As per a Black Footballers Partnership 2023's report, forty-three percent of Premier League players are from African or Caribbean heritage.

Yet, analysis by the equality organization found just 3.2 percent of board and senior leadership positions at 17 of 20 Premier League clubs are held by people from minority ethnic communities.

Regarding senior coaching positions, based on figures provided by eleven clubs, the percentage is 2%.

For all coaching roles – encompassing senior roles – from the same 11 clubs, the statistic is just five percent.

"He's certainly made history by virtue of him being announced as Chelsea head coach, and as an organization, we want to witness more such appointments," stated the chief executive of Kick It Out Samuel Okafor.

"We know that there exists a wealth of ability present in the ethnic minority communities... aspiring coaches want a chance to demonstrate what they can do. We need to persist in work hard to break those barriers once and for all."

Additionally, Rosenior is set to become the fourth full-time English head coaches presently managing in the top flight – joining Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe as well as Scott Parker – which lags behind Europe's remaining major leagues regarding national representation.

Sixteen of the 20 first division coaches in Serie A are Italian, 11 of the 20 in Spain, 12 of the 18 are German while 10 in Ligue 1 are French.

The present Blues caretaker manager Calum McFarlane commented: "I have no doubt every young English managers with a youth development pedigree are, in some way no matter who you support, supporting Liam.

"It's truly inspirational to up-and-coming British academy coaches to witness someone land that job with his background and we hope he will be highly successful."

Leroy Rosenior, Rosenior Sr., had a career with clubs such as Fulham, West Ham as well as Queens Park Rangers, and his managerial career peaked with a five-month spell in charge of the third-tier club Brentford back in 2006.

In 2019, he received an MBE in the 2019 New Year Honours for his services to tackling discrimination within the sport and beyond.

When Rosenior Jr hung up his boots he followed his father's footsteps. He began penning articles for The Guardian, and in one piece he addressed the lack of diversity of black coaches. He highlighted that race does not determine coaching skill arguing that opportunities must be awarded on merit.

He also made the view he has often stated: how vast under-representation leads to misunderstandings regarding footballers with diverse cultural and ethnic heritage.

In a podcast with The Athletic FC, Rosenior highlighted how his leading forward, Emmanuel Emegha, was labelled "hard to manage" and "emotional", noting that he understood the Dutch international of Nigerian descent. The striker is expected to follow him with a move from France to West London in July.

In subsequent Guardian columns, Rosenior also admitted to being "embarrassed" to hear a staff member utter a homophobic slur. He vowed his support for the Premier League's inclusion initiative and wrote a public message to the former US President while he was in office, accusing him of "overt" prejudice.

He has subsequently made his name as a manager – first at Hull City, later at Strasbourg – with Wayne Rooney said this week he was "among the best coaches I've ever worked with" following their time together at Derby County.

The manager bid his farewells at Strasbourg on Tuesday morning before signing a long-term contract at Chelsea.

The Blues had the Premier League's first African heritage manager with Gullit as well as the first black skipper in Paul Elliott.
